Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs Position

Position Description

The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs (APFA) oversees faculty hiring and employment processes and records, including appointments, contracts, promotion and tenure, post-tenure review, partner placement, faculty credentials, and special appointments such as emeritus and endowed positions. The APFA reports to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and works closely with Faculty Affairs leadership, HROE, deans, department heads, and other administrators to ensure consistent implementation of faculty-related policies.

The APFA provides leadership in the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of institutional business practices and human capital management (HCM) systems that support faculty records, contracts, and faculty hiring and employment processes. The role includes managing major cyclical processes, maintaining accurate and reliable faculty data, and improving efficiency while reducing administrative burden.

This position serves as a central point of coordination and communication among Faculty Affairs, colleges, departments, and faculty. It promotes transparency, collaboration, and best practices in faculty recruitment, hiring, review, and career progression. Success in the role requires strong organizational and project management skills, technical proficiency, and the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse stakeholder groups while balancing attention to detail with a strategic perspective.

Key Responsibilities
- The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs provides strategic leadership for faculty personnel policies, processes, and systems across the institution. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, the APFA plays a central role in advancing institutional priorities related to faculty recruitment, success, evaluation, career progression, and retention.

- The position oversees all major faculty hiring and employment processes, including hiring, promotion and tenure, annual evaluation, post‑tenure review, credentialing, endowed appointments, and emeritus status. The APFA provides leadership for the annual promotion and tenure and review cycles, communicates expectations and timelines to academic units, and advances process improvements that strengthen rigor, fairness, and consistency while respecting academic freedom.

- Working in close partnership with deans, department heads, associate deans for faculty affairs, and the Division of Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness, the APFA serves as a trusted advisor and institutional liaison on faculty-related policies, procedures, and governance matters. The role supports faculty recruitment and retention initiatives, including oversight of dual‑career and partner placement efforts, and contributes to fostering an engaging and inclusive academic culture.

- The APFA also leads the strategic evolution of the Faculty Affairs Portal and related platforms, ensuring that systems effectively support faculty data, workflows, and reporting needs.
